Member of the Month – Nick “Mr. 225” Shafer!

Congratulations, Nick!

Once a month, our community votes to recognize a single member who embodies the spirit of Subversus Fitness. He/she is someone who has a good attitude, even on the toughest days, is always there to lend support to fellow athletes, and generally goes the extra mile to help build our community to become even more awesome. When it’s time to vote, we send a reminder email out to the entire crew, but if you ever see another member do something really cool for you or the gym in general, feel free to shoot us an email at info@crossfitcc.com or leave a note in the box to tell us what happened! Our Member of the Month is always awarded a FREE month of membership to Subversus.

What some of you had to say about Nick!

“Nick Shafer is The Storm. He’s an animal the likes of which the Basement has rarely seen. The King Kong of any WOD that includes rowing. A total Beast in Oly. And, a habitual cheerleader (commonly known to scream at Crossfitters from the back of LBC).

I first got to know Nick when we competed in last year’s Stache Showdown. Shafer killed every event, and continued cheering me on even as he held a #155 axle bar on his back during Tim Heckman’s gauntlet of death, “Double DT.” I’ve also personally witnessed Nick row faster than any human should be able to row. Shaferis a great athlete, and an even better guy. This is well-deserved. Congrats!  #225Forever #LiftHeavyShit – Drew W.

“Congrats Nick! As if his legacy wasn’t already solidified at > because of 225, it’s great to see him finally win motm!  Nick is one the nicest and friendliest people in the gym. He always hangs around to catch up, cheer, or offer morale to support. He’s made serious gains joining LBC and not doing his ridiculous wod-gymnastics-durable gauntlet.

In case you didn’t know, the guy is a quizzo master. Only been with him once but he thrives there. It’s like when you see Free Willy getting released back into the ocean. It’s just his natural place to be. More importantly than quizzo though, Nick has one of the greatest MGP posts of all times that sticks with me today. He gave out so many great Crossfit pick up lines so I highly recommend reading it and potentially using them (maybe at homecoming?!?!).

“Are you my toes, because I want to take you to a bar.” – Nick Shaffer 9/12/17″ – Kyle

“Well deserved! About damn time LBC gets some respect on the MOM. Nick’s a beast, can squat a bus and pretty sure he did marathon row just to see how tough it was. He’s not only strong but also very smart about his training. My favorite Shafer one liner was back at LBC, we both were chalking up before a lift, getting our game face on, he goes “so… you come here often”. The question wasn’t referencing subversus or LBC, he was talking about the chalk bucket… Congrats Nick.” – Ryan K.

TWO TWENTY FIVE!! Had to do it. But on a more serious note, so lucky to know someone as great as Nick Shafer! He is such a hard working athlete and it’s been so fun to witness all of his ~gains~ back in LBC. The best part about Nick is that I’m pretty sure he wants other people to make their lifts even more than they do. You can always count on him for that “Come on you got it!” when you’re struggling to stand up a heavy squat. His positive energy is truly contagious. From trying to catch donuts at the bottom of a snatch to organizing quizzo nights, the gym wouldn’t be the same without ya!” – Sam

“Congrats Nick! You becoming member of the month is no surprise to me. You’re so positive, encouraging, and a tremendous athlete. We’re lucky to have in the gym.

Perhaps what’s most impressive about you is your persistence in trying to get better at the sport we all love. Whether you’re doing bouncy handstands in gymnastics, or perfecting YOUR clean in oly(which btw still looks way too easy–TEACH ME YOUR WAYS!) it’s great to see you give it your all in whatever you. You embody what a subversus member should! Hardworking, inclusive and just an overall great guy! And although I still have no idea what 225, and it scares me every time you and George yell it, I’m glad to have you in our weird little community. Congrats once more buddy!!!

PS- If you haven’t done quizzo with Nick, you’re missing out! Such a good time! ” – Luis

Congratulations from the Coaches!

“Nick is an American tradition, like fathers chasing children with power tools. Congrats!” – Tim

“Congrats Nick! What a great choice for MOTM. Nick can be counted on to bring hard work, support, and smile to any training session. His dedication and progress within olympic lifting has been inspiring to watch, and he is a great teammate as well as a great athlete. He shows up on time, is always cheering on his fellow athletes, and makes every session better by being there.”  – Justin

“Great guy, even better beard. It must be the secret to his strength. How else could he be putting 255 over his head back in LBC?” – Ave

Nick is a national treasure! It’s been such a treat getting to watch him grow as an athlete. I think he came to Subversus looking for something he couldn’t quite put his finger on, and I feel so lucky that has found “it” here & has chosen us to be his new home. I know that he treats this gym as a sacred space, and he really values the time he spends with his fellow athletes and coaches- his admiration for what we do, his recognition of everyone’s efforts, and his commitment to becoming a better athlete means he is one of my favorite people to coach, train with, and be around. Nick is so thoughtfully proactive in enhancing everyone’s gym experience: he knows which athletes like to be cheered for, and which one’s (who don’t prefer the spotlight,) appreciate a quiet high five. He is consistently helping me brainstorm for more social activities in LBC and on the days when I need it most, his energy is contagious. He’s got stories relevant to any given topic, approximately 1 crop top, and a very unique presence in this gym.  ” – Morgan

“Nick holds a special place in my heart because not only did he come to one of my endurance seminars, but brought his mother, brother and 2-3 friends. Honestly though that’s what is most impressive about Nick, he doesn’t just want success or a positive experience, he wants to bring others along as well.  He also has a strong sock game. A well deserved recognition!” -Wylie

Now, from the winner!

What’s your day job and profession?

I am currently working as Chief medical scribe for some outpatient offices at Jefferson. It’s basically a transcriptionist for doctors. I’d like to eventually go to medical school.

What’s your favorite workout?

I love the workout that we’ve done a few times at the gym that’s a 1 mile run and the 5000 lbs G2OH. I tend to like workouts with a lot of barbell stuff. I had a good time doing Grace and then re-attempting it and trying to beat my time. I feel like there’s a few Crossfit standards that I haven’t attempted yet, and would like to give a shot, like DT. I also love a good team workout, or any workout where I get to work with other people.

What’s a goal or something that you’re working on?

I have been putting in a lot of time on the platforms in the back, and I really wasnt to total 225 kgs between the C&J and Snatch. I also want to start working on some other movements that I haven’t been working on since the Open, such as Double-unders, Muscle-ups and handstand walking.

What’s something about you that most people don’t know?

I have a twin, but we do not look alike. I have tried to recruit him to the basement of dreams but he’s a pretty avid runner so it hasn’t worked (yet). I rowed for 7 years in high school and college, and I love that team mentality, and cheering people on (one of the reasons I love the gym). One of the strangest things I’ve ever done is a competition with Red Bull in 2012 called the Red Bull Flugtag. Long story short, 4 friends and I built a giant hawk (our college mascot), danced around for a few hours in hawk costumes and pushed it off a 30 ft tall pier into the water in the hopes that it would fly and then we jumped in after it. We took third place and won people’s choice, but it was a surreal experience altogether that left me with equal parts nostalgia and disgust when drinking Red Bull.
