Member of the month September – Jason “JMal” Malumed

Congratulations, Jason!

Once a month, our community votes to recognize a single member who embodies the spirit of CrossFit Center City. He/she is someone who has a good attitude, even on the toughest days, is always there to lend support to fellow athletes, and generally goes the extra mile to help build our community to become even more awesome. When it’s time to vote, we send a reminder email out to the entire crew, but if you ever see another member do something really cool for you or the gym in general, feel free to shoot us an email at info@crossfitcc.com or leave a note in the box to tell us what happened! Our Member of the Month is always awarded a FREE month of membership to CFCC.

What some of you had to say about JMal…

“Why are you asking me? I voted for Nikki”. – Greg

“I can not believe this! Congrats Jmal on your amazing victory. I’m in complete shock.Wowowowowoow!

What can I say about Jmal? There is a lot that I can’t say, but yeah we’ll hold off on that. He’s an astounding rower, can bear crawl quicker than anyone I know, and have you guys seen this kid do the cotton eye joe dance?

One of my fondest memories of Jmal was about 3 years ago when I was partnered with him on a Saturdaywod. I was so intimidated, since I had just started crossfit a couple of months prior. Here’s this guy…looks pretty in shape, super tall, amazing hair and I for one didn’t feel worthy enough to be his partner. But as the wod went on, which involved tons of ring rows, pull-ups and push ups, and as Jmal saw me struggling he stopped me and said, “Yo, I got this!” Jmal so graciously finished the rest of the push ups that I couldn’t do and I am forever grateful.

Simply put, Jmal is Jmal. He’s one of a kind and as a Veteran at our gym it’s great to see one of the old guys get some much deserved recognition. Congrats again on this extraordinary victory!” – Luis

“Congratulations to our new dear leader for the month!  With the vote stuffing skills of Janis “Kelly Ann” Burrell and the shrew dness of Ian “Bannon” Doherty, the dark horse candidate prevailed, as is customary for the 8am!  I, for one, welcome our new overlord!  All hail JMAL!” – Big Papi

It has come to my attention that Jason Malumed has won member of the month. I have a few things to say:

“It is an absolute travesty that Mr. Malumed has won Member of the Month. While he squats just around 375, I can squat 800 with a 25X2 tempo lbs. While he deadlifts a bit over 500 lbs, I can deadlift over 900 from a deficit of two of those black mats. Meanwhile while Jason can do Fran in about 3:30, I am completed Fran in 1:45 while wearing a 20 lb weighted vest. When you look at the statistics you can see that Bob Morris is the true first Member of the Month for Sub>ersus Fitness and JMal is merely a pretender.” – Bob Morris

“Jmal was a great rower at our Alma Mater and was even captain of the heavy weight crew team. He was in the peak of his physical ability back in 2009 or so. Fast forward to 2017 and Jmal is an exceptional crossfitter, albeit usually injured. Sigh.

He has waited a long time to become MOTM and he is not letting his constant battle with injuries get in the way! You go Jmal! Congratulations!!” – Dani

“Where do I begin? When I first started the 8am class I thought JMal was a bully.  He was always stealing my white step stools! I couldn’t understand why he needed a stool when he’s over six feet tall. SMH. But then I discovered that he made the 8AM playlists and had great taste in music. I soon learned that besides being a lot of fun, (and very funny), he’s also really helpful.  He’s always there to spot someone or scream words of encouragement, (sometimes R rated), as he’s very passionate about our workouts. He even taught me about lifting shoes! I always workout across from him with hopes that some of his greatness will rub off.

He’s definitely the heart and soul of the 8AM Disease and we’re so happy he’s ours. Our crazy rowing, heavy lifting, wod crushing, music loving, pea protein guzzling JMal truly is “The Storm.” -Janis

“It has come to my attention that some members of the unofficial whiteboard….”  How the tables have turned, what a pleasant surprise!  This is a positive post for Jmal, not him being dragged into the principals office again! The times are surely changing!

Jason Malumed, defeater of Mike Tom in the 2015 Crossfit Open, is Subversus first MOTM! His banishment from this award for unfounded allegations of betting on comp team members has ended with the name change of the gym. Who could’ve seen that coming after three plus years in the basement of dreams skipping out on the past two opens?!?! Feels like Pete Rose just made it to the Hall of Fame. Despite the damaged cossack, he still breathes fresh air, provides inspirational quotes, manages to chew his food, sleeps in darkness and most impressively, run a hard fought campaign to win this honor.

Things you may not know about Jason. He yearns for deep Cossack squats, loves Surströmming, a founding member of cfcc4.3, pending tall person committee member, completely average former D1 collegiate rower, avid werewolf player, unofficial hq leader, huge quote repeater enthusiast, wine just wine like all the wine, and he gets ridiculously angry for having his scores sniped by the noon and night classes since he is part of the 8am d̶i̶s̶e̶a̶s̶e̶ class.

Congratulation Jason Malumed! You’ve waited years and it is finally your moment! What an amazing way to remind people of your relevancy as you come back from a devastating injury! #neat #synthesize #analyze >” -Kyle

Some words from the coaches!

It had to happen sooner or later. Congrats on winning, and for never complaining about anything during your training.  #8amdisease” – Tim

JMal has a cute dog.

And the spirit of the 8am deep within.” -Morgan

When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer.” If Plutarch were alive, he might frame JMal’s winning MOM in the same way. What can’t this guy do? Unofficial consigliere, 8am stalwart, in-house comp guru, and now, after a well-executed campaign, Member of the Month. Congratulations.” – Justin

“There’s nobody I’d rather remind to not forceably shout other people’s names while squatting than Jmal. Congratulations” -Wylie

Jmal ran a very successful MOTM campaign. Congrats on being the very first MOTM at Subverus Fitness.” – Ave

A few words from Jason!

What’s your day job and profession?

I currently act in an advisory position on the board of a small, Philadelphia-based technology startup. Our current project revolves around utilizing the built-in capabilities of Facebook Groups (specifically “Closed Groups”) to build what we refer to as “social networks within social networks” or “*un*official social networks”. For our initial target demographic, we are exploring how to utilize these capabilities for gyms, especially those looking for more cost-effective, higher user interaction alternatives to services like Wodify, etc.

On the side, I also run a wine import and distribution company focusing on small production, organic/biodynamic wines, selling them in PA, NY, NJ, and DC.

How did you find CrossFit and what do you enjoy about being a member at Subversus?

I found CrossFit because I am a washed-up college athlete. After rowing competitively for 8 years, I needed something new. I did road cycling for a while, but that took too much time. Then I switched to Ashtanga Yoga in a traditional Mysore style, but I missed squatting heavy weights and making loud noises. Now, I finally found CrossFit, where I happily get to crush people named “Greg Shahade” on a daily basis.

What I enjoy most about Sub>ersus is getting to learn inspiring new quotes every day.

What’s your favorite workout?

Not rowing.

What’s a goal or something that you’re working towards?

I really only have two long term goals:

1. Don’t get fat.

2. Don’t get hurt.

Number 2 not going so well for me at the moment…

What’s something about you that most people don’t know?

I am the storm.

Congratulations Jmal! Keep up the, well, you know. Keep at it. In all seriousness, you’re a character and we all love you. Most of the time.
